Squeeze in a Few Extra Pixels

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

I hate to offer this advice but I’ll do it anyways…

  • Image > Image Size…
  • drop down to ‘percent’
  • enter 105%
  • make sure all the check boxes are checked and ‘Ok’
  • repeat until desired size
  • could try some sharpening techniques here as well…
    • maybe an unsharpen mask.

This is not the best way to “up res” but it works. It’s better than buying software out there to do it for you if you don’t have the money or don’t want to spend the money. The best thing is to get the original as large as possible… obviously.

Night Photos

Want to make your night photos pop?  Duplicate the layer, change the blending mode to ‘overlay’.

Add or Remove Color

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

Does your image suffer from too much yellow?  Do you need to bring back the greens?  Use the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, select the color you want to target from the drop down and adjust the ’saturation’ slider.  Sometimes using more than one color will help, for example greens get brighter with the ‘green’ and both ‘yellow’ options.

Where did my texture go?

To bring texture back into your image try using the healing brush. Works best after using the clone tool or paint brush, although you do need the texture on the image to target.

Clone Tool

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

While I was restoring a photo at Image Arts I ran into a problem with some color fadding at the bottom of the image.  The solution…

Clone Tool

  • mode: color
  • opacity: ~30%

Curves Dialogue Box

ctrl + ‘m’ is the shortcut. Click and hold the eye dropper on the image to see where the range of colors resides. Ctrl + Click and release to have the dot show up in the dialogue box so you can adjust more precisely.

Select or Outline an Image

Extractor tool in Photoshop. Use a smaller brush around the more defined edges and a bigger brush around the larger undefined areas like hair. When finished use the ‘history brush’ to paint back in areas that you still desire.

Edge Vignette Effect

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

To get a dark feathered edge or vignette effect; duplicate the layer. Mode to ‘multiply’. Make a selection about an inch or so from the edges, feather extreme and delete.

Gradient Map

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

The trick to using the gradient map is in the blending mode, ‘color’ is a good option but the others can produce good results as well. Another tip is to click on the gradient and then the circle with the arrow to load new presets.
