Thinking Outside the Border

I’ve used the “outside the border” effect before, here is a new approach.

  1. create a new layer
  2. select the area that will be white and fill it with white
  3. select the image layer and select what you want to stand out
  4. ctrl + ‘j’ to put the selection on a new layer and hide the full imageĀ
  5. erase away everything that you don’t want
  6. drag the layer above the white layer and make the full image visible
  7. click on the layer that will ‘pop out’ then add a layer style - drop shadow
  8. right click on the drop shadow layer effec and choose ‘create layer’
  9. load white layer selection and inverse
  10. delete the dropshadow layer with selection
  11. add text, be creative

A creative option would be to add a drop shadow and stroke to a selection within the image and make the white area transparent. This effect would work well with the Digital Mattes tutorial.
